Trigger Point Injections are injections of a local anesthetic and a steroid directly into a muscle spasm or knot. By numbing the site of pain with the anesthetic, and relieving inflammation with the steroid, muscles are able to relax and stretch more than they would otherwise be able to. If the injection provides no relief – or complete relief – the procedure will not be repeated. If you experience partial, sustained muscle pain relief, a series of injections may be used to provide a greater degree of comfort, enabling you to perform daily tasks and physical therapy more freely.
Depending on the area of the injection you may be seated or lying down during the procedure, which takes only a few minutes to perform. If the trigger point therapy is effective, you will experience relief nearly instantaneously.
You should be able to perform physical therapy and stretching exercise immediately following the procedure. You will be able to return to your normal tasks upon leaving our office. There are very few risks or side effects with Trigger Point Injections and we discuss them and any concerns you may have prior to treatment.
