Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is an advanced procedure used in the treatment of persistent, chronic back or neck pain in patients who have not found relief from other treatments. A small, portable, battery-powered device that generates gentle electrical impulses is implanted in the back. Soft, thin wires are attached to the device and inserted into the back near the spinal column. The impulses from the device block the brain’s ability to sense pain in the targeted areas. SCS does not work for every patient, but many report significant relief from the procedure.
Spinal Cord Stimulation therapy always begins with a short, one-week trial to outfit you with a temporary stimulator. The procedure for the trial takes about an hour to perform. If you experience greater than 50% relief, you will be offered a permanent stimulator. The permanent device is implanted beneath the skin, usually in the buttock or abdomen in a minimally invasive outpatient procedure.
You will have some restrictions following the procedure. We will discuss the procedure, the recovery process and any concerns you may have prior to SCS treatment.
