Facet joints connect one vertebra to the other so the spine can flex and bend fluidly. Typically, inflammation within these joints causes pain in either the neck, back, arms or legs. Facet Joint Injections are sometimes used diagnostically to confirm that symptoms are related to inflammation within the facet joints. They are also used to treat pain temporarily so patients can perform other longer-term treatments such as physical therapy more comfortably.
A combination of an anesthetic and cortisone are injected from the back directly into the facet joint. Pain relief is immediate. Some patients report mild discomfort from the injection but most find the roughly 30 minute procedure uneventful. Relief varies by individual, with some patients experiencing relief for a few hours and others for a few months. Facet Joint Injections may be performed up to three times a year, depending on your conditions and individualized treatment plan.
You can expect to resume regular activities the day after receiving a Facet Joint Injection. Side effects are rare and we will discuss any risks and your concerns prior to treatment.
