Epidural Steroid Injections (ESIs) are highly effective for treating pain in the neck, back and legs. A combination of cortisone, a local anesthetic and saline are injected directly into the epidural space – the area between the spinal cord and the membrane that covers the spinal cord. They don’t specifically treat an underlying condition. They provide relief by reducing inflammation and flushing out materials that cause pain and inflammation.
The procedure takes just a few minutes to perform. Some patients experience modest pain but most report feeling pressure. Because the injection includes an anesthetic, most patients experience immediate relief, which will wear off after a few hours. Soon after the relief from ESIs,– which may last for weeks or months – comes from the removal of debris and reduction in inflammation. ESIs may be performed approximately every two weeks if your condition warrants it.
