The Ganglion Impar is a cluster of nerves located in the lower back, between the sacrum and the coccyx. A Ganglion Impar (Coccyx) Block may be used to diagnose or treat pain that results from inflammation or damage to this area. An imagine device called a fluoroscope, is used to guide a curved needle into the sacrum/coccyx joint so a local anesthetic can be injected directly into the Ganglion Impar. Single and sometimes multiple treatments can eliminate or significantly reduce pain. Blocking pain for even a short time is helpful for confirming that the source of pain has been identified.
The procedure itself takes about 15 minutes. We will administer a local anesthetic to numb the injection site, which may sting momentarily, but other than that the procedure is generally comfortable.
Pain relief is often profound and immediate. You will be able to go home following the procedure. If you have tenderness around the injection sites, ice will help relieve the discomfort. Generally, you will be able to resume normal activities following the procedure. The risks of the Ganglion Impar Block procedure are low and we will discuss any concerns you may have prior to treatment.
